7/4/17….Summertime and the living’s easy

By: Matt Kowalchuk

SUMMER FLOW

Sublime totally nailed it. Summertime and the living’s easy. We are officially into summer. More days then not the weather sure feels like it.
Penns Creek is running around the Median Daily Statistic aka average flow for this time of year, meaning the water is in pretty good shape.

Many folks have been calling and asking about water temps. We advise carrying a thermometer with you while you fish as the temperature varies daily.
The super sunny and hot days without a doubt heat up the water. It is important to keep in mind every night as the sun sets and the air temperature drops the water temps drops also.
When the water is over 72 degrees it is a good idea to leave the trout alone. The water is coming out of Penns Cave at 52 degrees so to stay on the safe side try fishing closer to Coburn.
The water tends to warm up more around Poe Paddy and as it flows down stream.

Mornings have been consistently good for the trout fishing. You can’t really be out to early.
The saying, “the early bird gets the worm” holds very true as the summer progresses. Nymphs and Streamers are key from first light.
The summertime blue quill is hot and heavy. The cooler the days the later the spinner fall, the hotter the earlier.

ISO’s, Cahills, Craneflies, little black and little tan Caddis, BWOS and Yellow Drakes are hatching and bringing fish to the surface.
Terrestrial time is upon us: hoppers, beetles, ants, sunken ants, and greenies are some super reliable day-time flies.

We are continuing to send out Guided Trips with our Guides and Anglers finding great success.
If you didn’t make it up this Spring, summer has plenty to offer.
Let our Guides help make it a little easier if your not sure about the summer bite.
Remember The Feathered Hook Guide Guarantee: If you don’t catch a fish, your next trip is free!

WARM WATER ESCAPADES

Summer means different things to different people but to us it means Smallmouth Bass!
Lower Penns has a great smallie population and the fishing is really heating up, no pun intended.
We’ve been catching them underneath and on top. It’s sure hard to beat smallmouth on topwater!
Stop in the shop and we can recommend some patterns and places to go.

Single person Smallmouth float trips are also available.
Take advantage with one on one instruction as our guides put you on some lunker smallies!

You never know what might eat your fly!

We hope you have a great 4th of July.

Stay cool, keep em’ wet and we’ll see you in Coburn.
